Part 3, Rescuers

There are many stories and photographs in the book Rescuers, by Gay Block and Malka Drucker. The stories are centered around those who helped rescue people in the Holocaust. There are many different stories as each person has their own perspective. These stories tell of troubled times and victories for those they were protecting. The lives of these rescuers are fascinating, many saying they would do it all over again even with such sever risk.

A story that stuck out to me in this section was from Andree Geulen. She at first discusses the emotions even so many years later. She is saddened still thinking about telling a five year old she has a different name. She then discusses how she saw children leaving her class as she was a teacher and this saddened her so she decided to take action. She was not a mother at the time as she was young, and says later it would have been much harder if she had already been a mother. She could not imagine having her children taken away. This story interested me as this woman did not consider her self a woman of faith but still did an act that one might consider Godly and did it anyway. She saw there were problems and made effort to do what she could. I like how she was a teacher and cared so much for children she decided it was for her to help rescue.
